Linguavest: Language Learning Advice & Coaching

Linguavest offers educational consulting & coaching services for individuals, families and organisations who want to invest in language learning, particularly African languages in South Africa, and internationally, indigenous and minority languages.

A core aim of Linguavest is to be realistic about the resources and constraints for learning, recognising that scarcities of capital – for example, time & energy, social opportunities, motivational intensity – must be creatively overcome for successful language learning to occur.

Linguavest’s research and advisory services are derived from a recent doctoral study on the nature of language learning success (by second language learners). This has been applied to the analysis of clients’ specific individual, familial or institutional profiles and their desired target language, in order to provide personalised, contextualised advice and coaching services.

Language learning requires investment.

In a world where English reigns supreme, learning another language can be difficult. Motivation and discipline are in scarce supply, and there are often many other scarcities that make investing in a language difficult, for example:

  • available speakers of the target language,
  • high-quality language tuition,
  • fit-for-purpose learning resources,
  • contextualized knowledge of language acquisition and how best to approach learning.

Irrespective of whether its a large global language like Spanish or Mandarin Chinese, or a smaller regional language like isiXhosa or Yucatec Mayan, we can help you to invest your time, energy and money wisely towards language learning and the acquisition of useful and meaningful linguistic capital.

How does Linguavest work?

Receiving Linguavest educational consulting & coaching services will typically follow the following four-step pattern:

  1. Complete a free initial assessment
Using a carefully-formulated questionnaire, you will provide us with the data required to understand who you are, a snapshot of what your resources and constraints are, and why investment in the target language is a priority. For assistance in completing the questionnaire, schedule a free 30-minute appointment. Alternately, contact us to request the questionnaire to complete in your own time.
  2. Attend an in-depth interview
We follow up the initial assessment with one hour-long interview (or several) to delve deeper into the specifics of your situation, whether as an individual, family or institution. At this stage, we test out various ideas (based on your initial assessment data) about the ideal approaches to language learning, by focusing on the largest resources or constraints. You’ll enjoy this, as our questions will help you to think strategically about the opportunities for learning that can be inserted in your existing routines or relationships, and where you can find sustainable periods of time to allocate towards your language learning.
  3. Receive a comprehensive roadmap report
Once the interview has been completed (and we’ve had time to think through your specific circumstances and needs), you will be presented with a detailed learning roadmap, which involves an outline of general and specific advice for learning the target language. Based on your feedback to this, we will craft a discipline contract for you to sign and set up a start date for your learning to commence.
  4. Periodic check-ins for further advice and accountability
Receiving an advice is one thing; implementation is another. Once committed, your investment in the target language will be a dynamic process and subject to the volatility of everyday life. Because of this, ongoing advice and coaching sessions will help you remain disciplined, intentional in your learning, and sufficiently agile to overcome the inevitable difficulties you will face.

Client-specific research and advice

Linguavest offers its educational consulting & coaching services at three different levels: individuals, families, and organisations. All collectives like a family or organisation are made up of individuals, however from a language investment perspective, are far more complex than the sum of their parts.

  • Individuals
If you’re an individual wanting or needing to learn a new target language, we provide bespoke advice and coaching services that take into account your personality, previous language-relevant experience(s), your motivations for learning, the social dynamics of your context, and the specific constraints on your time and energy. We can advise you on how to get from point A to Z in your learning journey, avoiding unnecessary detours and potholes along the way, and within reasonable and realistic parameters.
  • Families
Families are complex units for language learning. Taking into account different personalities, relationship dynamics, bilingual/multilingual issues, the presence of nannies or other domestic workers, etc ‒ whether you have triplets or an only child, a 1-year-old or a 13-year-old teenager, we can provide the advice needed for parents or guardians to sustainably invest in the conditions that will enable themselves and children under their care to successfully learn a target language.
  • Organisations
Whether your organisation is religious, political, commercial, or academic in nature, you have an established language policy ‒ either officially or in practice ‒ that supports or obstructs the learning and use of the target language. After conducting research with managers and other stakeholders, we provide organisations with advice on how to change the linguistic status quo, fostering the conditions for learning and use of the target language.
